A few things you might not know about John…

What is your favorite quote?

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”  Attributed to H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

What is your favorite book?

Really hard to choose just one. I enjoy reading, especially true adventure stories such as “Alone on the Ice” by David Roberts and others like this.  One of my favorites that I’ve read in the last year (and in keeping with the theme of the prior question) was “The Comfort Crisis” by Michael Easter.  In this book, the author encourages people to get out of their comfort zone and to experience time outdoors in nature and to “do hard things.“.

What is your favorite artist or band?

Also, hard to choose just one.  Music has always been important to me and I enjoy listening to many types of music.  I especially lean towards acoustic instruments and good song writing, with an emphasis on both the music and the lyrics.  Jackson Browne has always been a favorite of mine in this regard, and if I had to pick a favorite album of his, it would be “For Everyman.”  (I still have the vinyl copy).  Jason Isbell is another favorite.

Are you a traveler or a homebody?

“I’m a bit of both.  I really enjoy traveling to and experiencing new places, especially if it involves some type of outdoor activity.  Some of my trips in recent years have been hiking on the Appalachian Trail, Trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal, hiking and exploring in Tuscany and in Germany and Austria, and just last summer my son and I hiked 100 miles on the West Highland Way in Scotland.  When I’m not out seeing the world, I love spending time at home with my family and being outdoors on our small rural acreage.
